During a session of the National Assembly on Friday, Dharam Gokhool was unanimously chosen as the new President of the Republic of Mauritius, succeeding Prithvirajsing Roopun, whose term concluded on December 2. Gokhool, a former Minister of Education and a prominent figure in Mauritian politics, expressed deep gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility following his election.
In conveying his sentiments to local media, he stated, “It is a weighty responsibility on my shoulders, but I am committed to upholding the honor of the Republic of Mauritius.” As a former professor at the University of Mauritius, Gokhool initiated his political journey in 1976 and has also held the position of Minister of Industry.
It is important to note that the electoral process for the Mauritian presidency is indirect, with the President being elected by the members of the National Assembly. The President’s role primarily comprises honorary functions and does not entail executive powers.
In the same parliamentary session, Robert Hungley was elected as the Vice President of Mauritius by the members of parliament.
