Mauritius even though it’s a small island and pretty progressive among all the countries in Africa, but the attitude towards gay is not that great. Even though Supreme Court has decriminalised gay sex, it’s still considered a taboo by the common people and you might not be looked at positively by your neighbours.
There have been incidents of people not being allowed to rent homes if you are gay because landlords don’t like it. I have few friends who are gay but have kept their orientation hidden under wraps, they fear what will happen to them if it was made public. One of them was kicked out of the house by his parents because he told them he was gay with a stern warning that “never show your face to us again”.
Surveys in Mauritius about gay couples have shown mixed views towards LGBTQ+ rights and issues.
