Flic en Flac & Around - Mauritius

Introduction

Flic en Flac is a quite and pleasant town on the West coast of Mauritius with beautiful white sand beach and blue lagoon. Flic en Flac derived its name from an Old Dutch phrase “Fried Landt Flaak” that means “Free and Flat Land. The island has one of the best beaches protected by the surrounding coral reefs and South East trade winds by huge mountains. Major coastal development over the past 20 years have made negative effects on the nearby ecosystems such as the filling up of wetlands, leveling off of sand dunes and planting of casuarinas right to the water’s edge.

Nevertheless, this place is still a beauty and one of the popular places for accommodation purposes.

Places of interest

Flic en Flac beach is more than a mile long and most popular with swimmers the year round as fringing reef located some 400m offshore protects the lagoon from waves. Flic en Flac is a perfect place for diver’s where under-water caves and wrecks makeup for a delightful experience.

You can experience scuba diving as there are many dive sites all over the island. Beginners can start at the shallow side of the ocean, where experienced divers can head straight for the more adventurous dive sites such as cliffs, caverns, reefs, pinnacles and wrecks. You will have a unique experience to watch colorful fish like the butterfly and soldier fish, lion fish, giant lobsters, scorpion fish, stone fish, barracuda, large corals and if you are lucky enough you will be able to see dolphins and water turtles too. Dry climate and constant sunshine makes this beach perfect for sunbathing on the white sands.

You can enjoy Horse riding at a very cheap rate only £2/person along the beach for about 30 minutes.

Accommodation

Some nice hotels are found in the region namely the Hilton Resort and Spa, Pearle Beach Hotel, Sofitel Imperial Resort and La Pirogue to name a few. Many bungalows are also available for rent with great views on the beach at relatively good prices. Flice en Flac has a lot of restaurants including Mer de on the beach, ocean Restaurant, sea Breeze and many more offering delicious food.

The beach at Flic en flac has recently been voted the fourth best beach in the world. I f you are fond of photography don’t forget to carry your camera along with you as this beach is known for its spectacular sunsets – the best on the island, it is the place to visit at dusk.
