A new sub-variant of the Covid-19 virus, called NB.1.8.1, attracts the attention of experts in Asia and raises concerns in Europe. Observed in particular in Hong Kong, it currently circulates in several Asian countries, with transmission rates considered high in some regions. In Europe, cases have been reported in Spain, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands and France. In Mauritius, no cases of this new variant have been identified for the moment, but the authorities are calling for vigilance.

According to the available data, there is currently no scientific evidence to demonstrate that the NB.1.8.1 variant is more dangerous than the previous ones. Dr. Shameem Jaumdally, a virologist, nevertheless insists on caution, because this variant has a high transmission rate. Dr. Shameem Jaumdally also recalls an important point: even after a complete vaccination or a previous Covid-19 infection, reinfection remains possible, like seasonal flu.

Between May 19 and 25, 4,065 cases of acute flu were recorded, including some cases of Covid-19, says Dr. Fazil Khodabocus, Director of Health Services. However, no cases of the NB.1.8.1 variant have been detected to date. The health authorities are cautious and remain on alert.

The authorities call on the population to maintain precautionary measures, especially in the event of flu symptoms.
