“I hear the street, I understand the people. If I have to sacrifice my salary to suffer with the people, I will do it with cheerfulness of heart, but it only commits me, “said Labour MP Raviraj Beechook during his speech to the National Assembly this afternoon, Wednesday, June 18, as part of the budget debates.

Taking a position on the government’s controversial proposal to push back the age of eligibility for the universal pension from 60 to 65, the Red MP highlighted the deep discomfort felt among the population. He felt that this measure, far from being trivial, directly affects the dignity of seniors and deserves in-depth consideration. While affirming that “each measure announced is a seed planted for the future, for sustainable and responsible growth”, Raviraj Beechook wanted to specify: “It is not this government that has emptied the state coffers”.

If it really comes to sacrificing his salary, I can bet anything that he will never go for it. Politicians in almost all the countries come up with fake promises to show that they sympathise with people when in reality they have no concern whatsoever. Shaming the previous government and blaming them for everything has become a new norm, whether it’s USA, UK or Mauritius. Public should just take his word and force him to forfeit his 1 year of salary and distribute to people who are eligible for pension.
