Kimberley Le Court from Mauritius pulled off a sensational stunt by winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Kimberly Le Court has made history by becoming the first Mauritian rider to take the victory in the women’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège, or any Monument. The 29-year-old AG Insurance-Soudal leader beat Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) and Demi Vollering (FDJ-SUEZ) in the sprint after a thrilling final.
“I am speechless,” Le Court said in the flash interview, still struggling to comprehend her achievement. Things looked difficult for the rider in the last part of the race. “At one point, I was dropped, but I just wanted to get back. You should never give up; that has been proven today. On the Roche-aux-Faucons, I suddenly found my legs again. I got into a rhythm that I could maintain.”
Le Court picked up Marlen Reusser and Lotte Kopecky, who had fallen behind, and then joined Pieterse and Vollering. The three of them then caught up with Cédrine Kerbaol. Le Court had already made up her mind. “I tried to save my energy for the sprint. However, I started to suffer from cramps in the last five kilometers.” Although her body was protesting, Le Court did not let herself be deterred. She got into the slipstream of Vollering, who had to lead the sprint from the front. “I really wanted to sprint from the second wheel. I gave it my all; it’s amazing.”
