After several months out of operation, the Mauritius Trochetia is making a much-anticipated return to the maritime route connecting Mauritius and Rodrigues. Now back in service following extensive repairs, the vessel operated by the Mauritius Shipping Corporation (MSC) has three trips to Rodrigues already scheduled. The first departure is set for Wednesday, June 18, with additional voyages planned for July and August.
This long-awaited comeback is a welcome relief for many Rodriguans and regular passengers who rely heavily on this sea link—particularly for transporting large luggage, which is often difficult to manage by air. The Mauritius Trochetia also plays a key role in tourism, offering an affordable and practical alternative to flying between the islands.
Passengers can choose from four accommodation options: Tourist Class, First Class, Semi-Deluxe, and Luxury Class. Round-trip fares range from Rs 7,000 to Rs 13,000, depending on the class selected. Travelers also have the option to remain onboard during the stopover in Rodrigues, provided they stay for a minimum of two to three nights. This feature is especially popular among those seeking a unique “mini-cruise” experience between the islands.

Commissioned in 2001, the Mauritius Trochetia is a versatile vessel that also serves the island of Agaléga. However, its future remains uncertain: with an estimated lifespan of 25 years, it should theoretically be decommissioned in 2026. As a reminder, during his last trip, in February 2025, he was marked by an incident during the docking in Agaléga, causing damage that required his temporary withdrawal from service.

Owned by the State through the Mauritius Shipping Corporation, Mauritius Trochetia remains a symbol of the link between the islands of the Republic. His return, even temporary, is welcomed as a breath of fresh air for the inhabitants of Rodrigues and travelers wishing to reconnect with this mythical crossing of the Indian Ocean.
